Alessandro Tortato was born in Venice, Italy on March 18,
1969. He began piano lessons at an early age and received a degree in
Pianoforte at the “Benedetto Marcello” Academy of Music of Venice,
trained by Professor Anna Colonna Romano, and trained by Professor
Vacchi, Professor Viezzer and Professor Priori in composition. He
was later trained by Professor Zuccarini in orchestra conduction at the
“A: Casella” Academy of Music of L’Aquila, Italy.
He studied orchestral conducting with Gustav Kuhn, conducting the
orchestra “Pomeriggi Musicali” in Milan, Italy in 1994, with Julius
Kalmar in Vienna, Austria at the “Wiener Meisterkurse” in 1994, at the
“Hans Swarowsky” Associazione Culturale in Milan, Italy in
1995/96, with Peter Maag in Cagliari, Italy in 1996 where he appeared
in concert, with Gianluigi Gelmetti conducting the orchestra “Pomeriggi
Musicali” of Milan in 1997, with Yuri Ahronovitch and with Professor
Isaac Karabtchevsky in Riva del Garda, Italy in 1998 and 1999
respectively, and with Donato Renzetti with the orchestra Pomeriggi
Musicali of Milan, Italy once again. In January of 2001 he
received a Conducting Triennal degree under Donato Renzetti at the
Academy of Music in Pescara, Italy.
He served as Renzetti’s Principal Assistant in the Lanciano Festival of
2001. In July of 1993 he was present at the Civic Theatre of
Treviso, Italy in “Bottega,” an international workshop for young
singers and musicians, led by Peter Maag. On the occasion he was
honoured in his capacity as concertmaster. In the same year he
was awarded a scholarship by the European Community to attend a course
for concertmaster in Treviso, Italy, sponsored by “Asolo Musica,”
coordinated by Enza Ferrari, and attended by famous artists: Peter
Maag, Lucia Valentini Terrani, Maria Chiara and others. In June
of 1994 and 1996 he was a finalist at the International Competition for
Orchestra Conductors, sponsored by “Bottega” of Treviso, Italy.
Mr. Tortato is a concertmaster teacher at the “Villa Guidini” Academy
of Musica of Treviso, Italy, collaborating with mezzosoprano Stella
Silva. From July of 2002 to 2003 he taught opera’s repertoire by
the international music summer master in Sacile, Italy. He has
collaborated with Raina Kabaivanska and Sergio Segalini at the Academy
of Lyric and Choral Music in Osimo, Italy. He was invited to
conduct in Kajaani, Finland at the Mieslahti Soi Music Festival of
1999, during the symphonic season of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Chamber
Orchestra in October 2001 and for other Italian orchestras; always with
a great success. He was selected by Neeme Järvi and Jorma Panula
to participate in the Pärnu David Oistrakh Festival (Estonia, July
2001 - 2003). He was awarded a fellowship by the Wagner Stiftung
of Bayreuth for the 2003 Bayreuther Festspiele. In July of 2003 he won
first prize at the International Competition for Orchestra Conducting
of Maikop, Russia. After this success, Jorma Panula selected him
to conduct the Berliner Kammerphilharmonie at the famous Berliner
Philarmonie.
He has conducted many orchestras all over Europe (Pomeriggi Musicali -
Milano, Orchestra Filarmonica Romana - Roma, Orchestra dell’Accademia
della Scala - Milano, Orchestra da Camera del Friuli – Venezia Giulia -
Trieste, Kajaani Chamber Orchestra - Finland, Parnu City Orchestra -
Estonia, Edinburgh Youth Orchestra - Scotland, Moscow Chamber Orchestra
-Russia, Adygeya Republic National Symphony – Russia, Berliner
Kammerphilharmonie, Philharmonie, Berlin, Germany, Ensemble Orquestra
de Cadaques (Spain), Kharkov Philarmonic (Ucraina), Filharmonia Sudecka
(Walbrzych, Poland).
Alessandro Tortato holds two degrees: the first in Historical and
Political Sciences from Università degli Studi of Padua, Italy,
and the second in Contemporary History from Università degli
Studi of Venice, both with full marks and honours. He has
published numerous historical books and studies in Italy, where his
books about World War I have had particularly great editorial success.
He writes about contemporary history and music in “Corriere della
Sera”, the most important italian paper.
