Bass Baritone Samuel L. Smith is a captivating performer who is often singled out for his outstanding voice and excellent acting. 

This season marked his debut as Henry Mosher in Tobias Picker’s Emmeline with Dicapo Opera in New York, a role he repeated in Hungary.  He also sang Alfieri in Bolcom’s View from the Bridge with Vertical Players in Brooklyn.  In December and January he performs Basilio in  Il  Barbiere di Siviglia with Bleeker Opera Company in NYC.  In the spring he will make his debut in the title role of Gianni Schicchi with Boheme Opera of New Jersey and perform Bach’s Coffee Cantata with Herb Dimmock’s Bach in Baltimore series.  He was also invited to sing in an opera gala concert with Lake George Opera in April.   Mr. Smith will sing Ramphis in a concert performance of Aida with Coro Lirico on May 8.

Past opera credits include the title role in Don Pasquale with Anchorage Opera, Monterone in Rigoletto with both the Westfield Symphony Orchestra and the Garden State Performing Arts Center, Palemon in Thais with Palm Beach Opera, Basilio in Barber of Seville at Metro Lyric Opera in New Jersey, and performances of two new Martin Halpern operas.  Mr. Smith made his debut on the Lyric Opera of Chicago stage as the Jailer in Tosca.  He also performed  Commendatore in Don Giovanni with Wolf Trap Opera, Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Lake George Opera, Timur in a concert version of Turandot with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Scarpia in Tosca with the Sorg Opera, Leporello in Don Giovanni with the Metro Lyric Opera. 

As a concert artist, Mr. Smith has performed at some of the largest venues in New York.  He recently made his debut at Avery Fisher Hall in Haydn’s Theresienmesse, and made his debut at Carnegie Hall as the bass soloist in Mozart’s Coronation Mass.  He also sang at Weill Recital Hall in New York City as a winner of the Center for Contemporary International Vocal Competition.  He sang Haydn’s Paukenmesse with Mid-America Productions at Carnegie Hall.

As a resident artist with Palm Beach Opera, Mr. Smith sang the roles of Magnifico in La Cenerentola, Pasquale in Don Pasquale, Colline in La Boheme, Mephistopheles in Faust, Gualtiero in I Puritani, Angelotti in Tosca, Sprecher and Sarastro in the Magic Flute and the King and Ramfis in Aida.

Other performances have included debuts with the prestigious City Center Encores! in Romberg’s elusive New Moon, recorded on Shikaboom Records.  Mr. Smith recently made his debut with Sacramento Music Circus as Emile de Becque in South Pacific.
