| Bass Baritone Samuel L. Smith is a
captivating performer who is often singled out for his outstanding
voice and excellent acting. This season began with Monterone in
Verdi’s Rigoletto with the Westfield Symphony Orchestra and the Garden
State Performing Arts Center. He follows this with performances
of two Martin Hapern Operas; Grigory in Constancy and Rubbek in
resurrection day both at the Brooklyn Mucis School in October. He
also performed the title role in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale with the
Anchorage Opera Company. Last season he sang Palemon in Thais with Palm Beach Opera. He also sang a recital at Weill Recital Hall in New York City because he was a winner of the Center for Contemporary International Vocal Competition. He sang Blitch in Floyd’s Susannah with New York Opera Project at Hunter College. Following this was Haydn’s Paukenmesse with Mid-America Productions at Carnegie Hall. He performed the lead role in Martin Halpern’s opera The Well of Immortality at the Theater for the New City in New York and then sang the role of Basilio in Barber of Seville at Metro Lyric Opera in NJ. He made his debut at Carnegie Hall as the bass soloist in Mozart’s Coronation Mass and at Lyric Opera of Chicago stage as the Jailer in Tosca. He has performed Commendatore in Don Giovanni with Wolf Trap Opera, and Leporello in Don Giovanni at Pine Mountain Music Festival. He performed Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia in his debut at Lake George Opera. He also sang Timur in a concert version of Turandot with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Scarpia in Tosca with the Sorg Opera, and Leporello in Don Giovanni with the Metro Lyric Opera. He sang with the North Arkansas Symphony Orchestra as bass soloist in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. As a resident artist with Palm Beach Opera he was responsible for the roles of Magnifico in La Cenerentola, Pasquale in Don Pasquale, Colline in La Boheme, Mephistopheles in Faust, Gualtiero in I Puritani, Angelotti in Tosca, Sprecher and Sarastro in the Magic Flute and the King and Ramfis in Aida. Prior performances have included debuts with the prestigious City Center Encores! in Romberg’s elusive New Moon, recorded on Shikaboom Records. He recently made his debut with Sacramento Music Circus as Emile de Becque in South Pacific. 4/16/08 |
