Louis Salemno, “is a conductor with a solid grasp of his repertory and

performance.” (Jack Belsom, Opera Magazine) Maestro Salemno is a
regular guest conductor with opera companies throughout North America,
including Houston Grand Opera, L’Opera de Montréal, New York
City Opera, Vancouver Opera, Seattle Opera, Portland Opera, Opera
Pacific, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Baltimore Opera, Michigan Opera
Theatre, Florentine Opera of Milwaukee, Manitoba Opera and many others.
He is a frequent guest conductor of the New Orleans Opera, where he has
conducted La Traviata, Faust, Romeo and Juliet, The Daughter of the
Regiment, L’Elisir d’Amore, Madama Butterfly, Macbeth, La Boheme and
Tosca. For the Houston Grand Opera, he has conducted L’Elisir d’Amore
and Falstaff, and new productions of Aida, Hänsel and Gretel and
Dialogue of the Carmelites. Maestro Salemno has also conducted concerts
for the Houston Symphony, the Madison Symphony, and concerts with the
Cracow Philharmonic, as a guest of Kzysztof Penderecki. Maestro
Salemno was the Principal Guest Conductor of the Serbian National
Theater in Novi Sad, 2006 - 2007. A native of Philadelphia, Maestro Salemno began his career as musical assistant to Max Rudolf at the Curtis Institute. He was a recipient of the Walter Damrosch Memorial Award for Conductors, which included studies with Nadia Boulanger in Fontainebleau, France. He made his public debut as a conductor at the age of 15, leading the Harrisburg Symphony, which then was followed by conducting appearances with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Curtis Institute Orchestra. Maestro Salemno has served as the Artistic Director of the Manitoba Opera (Winnipeg), where he conducted Turandot, La Boheme, Tosca, and Macbeth, and Music Director of the Portland Opera (Oregon) where he conducted La Fille du Régiment, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Rigoletto, Don Pasquale, Aida, and Pagliacci/ Carmina Burana. He has also served as the Principal Conductor of the Texas Opera Theater, leading tours of La Cenerentola, La Boheme, Don Pasquale, Rigoletto, Nozze di Figaro, The Daughter of the Regiment, Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Madama Butterfly. As Associate Conductor of the Dallas Opera, Maestro Salemno conducted matinee performances of La Fille du Régiment, La Traviata, Andrea Chenier, Otello and Don Carlo. He has served on the conducting staff of Barcelona’s Gran Teatro del Liceo, the San Francisco Opera under Kurt Herbert Adler, and the Lyric Opera of Chicago under Bruno Bartoletti. He studied piano with Mieczyslaw Horszowski and appeared as piano soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra. 06/04/08 |
