| Praised in Opernwelt for his
“marvelous timbre, consistent throughout, well focused, excellently
agile voice,” Charles Reid is being recognized as one of his
generation’s leading lyric tenors. Currently under ‘fest’
contract at the Nationaltheater Mannheim, Mr. Reid brings his
“ravishing interpretations” to Tamino, Ferrando, Don Ottavio, Belmonte,
Belfiore, Tito, and Aceste, establishing him as one of the finest
Mozart tenors on the operatic stage today. In the Summer of 2006
Charles made his debut at the Salzburger Festspiele, singing Aceste in
Mozart’s Ascanio in Alba, released on DVD for Deutsche Grammophon. Charles Reid’s 2007/08 season at the Nationaltheater Mannheim opens with performances of Tamino and Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and Don Giovanni, and continues with Alfredo in Achim Freyer’s new production of Verdi’s La Traviata. Renowned German critic, Gabor Halasz, wrote, “Charles Reid gave a vocal and musical performance of Alfredo without any limitations or boundaries, with a shimmering tenor voice, flawless technique, extraordinary feeling for style, and very clear intonation.” This spring, Charles revisits Der Steuermann in a new production of Der fliegende Holländer shortly before returning to the Bayreuther Festpsiele to reprise the role of Kunz Vogelgesang in Katharina Wagner’s production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. The 2007/08 season also marks Mr. Reid’s debuts with Staatstheater Wiesbaden and Theater Winterthur as Alfredo in La Traviata and his ninth season on the roster of the Metropolitan Opera. Charles has performed throughout the U.S. on the stages of the San Francisco Opera, Connecticut Opera, Spoleto Festival U.S.A., L’Opéra Français de New York, Glimmerglass Opera, Sarasota Opera, Opera Carolina, and Central City Opera. On the concert stage, during the 2007/08 season Charles Reid debuts with Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society singing Mozart’s Requiem under the baton of John Nelson. In Europe, he sings Zadok the Priest in Handel’s Solomon with the Camerata Vocale Heidelberg and Beethoven’s C-Dur Messe with the Nationaltheater Mannheim. In celebration of the 400 year birthday of the city of Mannheim, Charles also sings the tenor solos in Franz Xaver Richter’s (1709-1789) seldom heard Messe in H-moll. Highlights of past seasons include performances with the National Symphony, Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival, Nashville Symphony, Madison Symphony Orchestra, Harrisburg Symphony, Berkshire Choral Festival, and the U.S. Naval Academy. Mr. Reid’s growing concert repertoire now includes over 35 masterwork compositions. In addition to the DVD of Mozart’s Ascanio in Alba, available on Deutsche Grammophon, Mr. Reid’s discography includes Ascanio in Alba on cd released on the dTb label with the Nationaltheater Mannheim. Charles is also on Gothic Records singing the tenor solos in Alice Parker’s Melodious Accord with the Master Chorale of Washington. Mr. Reid is the recipient of prestigious awards from the Richard Tucker Music Foundation, Loren L. Zachary National Vocal Competition, Florida Grand Opera YPO Competition, Connecticut Opera Competition, and the Marjorie Lawrence International Vocal Competition. 02/6/08 |
