| Jamaican-American Soprano Sonya
Headlam maintains an active performance schedule in the New York
area. Described as having a voice of “liquid tone”, her
engagements span the genres of art song, concert and opera. This
past summer she presented a vocal recital in Jamaica, followed by an
engagement at Fargo Moorhead Opera as Musetta in La
Bohéme. This April, Sonya sings the soprano solos for
Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem and Haydn’s Paukenmesse with
Distinguished Concerts International at Carnegie Hall. Last season she presented the music by various women composers in a concert in New York City. She also performed Menotti’s The Telephone with Delphi Opera in New York City. Sonya’s concert engagements have included Faure’s Requiem, Haydn’s Missa Brevis: St Joannis de Deo, The Messiah, Berlioz’s Les nuits d’été, Vivaldi’s Gloria and most recently Mahler’s Fourth Symphony with the Bronx Orchestra. Sonya’s recent sang a recital of 19th and 20th Century art song on the Trinity Church Recital Series at the historic St. Paul’s Chapel in downtown Manhattan. She recently sang Vaughn Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem with the Greenwich Choral Society and a concert at the Donnell Library in NYC in December. In February she made her debut with the Master Singers of Milwaukee as a soloist in Brahms’ German Requiem. Equally comfortable on the operatic stage, Sonya’s roles include Frasquita in Carmen, Musetta in La Bohème, Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro and Laurie in The Tender Land. Increasingly involved in the contemporary music scene, Sonya was a featured artist in two world premieres: Michael Sahl’s Katrina, Voices of the Lost at the Tribeca New Music Festival, and Richard Thompson’s The Mask in the Mirror in an event sponsored by the city and presented by the City University of New York. Other recent engagements include a performance of The Creation with One World Symphony and Brahms’ German Requiem with the Master Singers of Milwaukee. Sonya, a native of Ohio, received her training from Miami University and Mannes College of Music and is currently under the tutelage of Katherine Johnson. 4/02/10 |
