Ecuadorian soprano based in Colorado, Maria José Fabara is a versatile artist who has performed on stages throughout Latin America and the US. She id currently singing Norina in Don Pasquale at Ft. Collins Opera.  She has also received  he visa to perfortm in the US. Since moving to Colorado in 2022, she has established herself in the local music scene, bringing her distinctive Latin-American artistry and diverse talents to a variety of performances.
Her recent opera highlights include Despina in Così fan tutte at the Crested Butte Music Festival, Barbarina in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro with Opera Fort Collins, Frasquita in Bizet's Carmen for Opera Colorado's Student Matinee, Mimi in La Bohème with Steamboat Opera, Mariana in Illick's Frida Kahlo and the Bravest Girl in the World, Tiresias in Poulenc's Les Mamelles de Tirésias at Denver’s Newman Center, and Violetta in La Traviata under the baton of Maestro Dante Anzolini in Ecuador.
María’s artistic range extends to musical theater, where she has played Maria in West Side Story and Wendla in Spring Awakening at Teatro Nacional Sucre in Ecuador. She also portrayed the title role in the first Spanish-language production of Malloy’s Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812.
From 2022 to 2024, María toured with Central City Opera as a featured artist, performing in concerts and community engagement programs, including ¡Fiesta!—a celebration of Spanish and Latin American music—and Ciaroscuro, a mental health outreach initiative.
In Ecuador, she has performed at Teatro Nacional Sucre in notable roles such as Queen of the Night in La Flauta Mágica de los Andes—an adaptation of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte featuring Andean instruments—Lisette in Puccini’s La Rondine, Despina in Così fan tutte, and Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi.
While in Wichita, her notable performances included Flora in Verdi's La Traviata with Wichita Grand Opera, along with Susanna in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Adina in Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore, and Héro in Berlioz's Béatrice et Bénédict at Miller Concert Hall.
María holds an Artist Diploma from the University of Denver, a Master’s in Opera Performance from Wichita State University, and a Bachelor’s in Music Education from the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador
